Bulk and Selective Check Weighing
One distinct advantage of X-ray weighing is the ability to independently weigh
selected areas within a package. By weighing each area independently of each
other, the effective sensitivity can be improved.
For example, the box of breakfast drink mix below has twin stacks of packets
stacked on top of each other. Each stack has 20 packets or 40 packets in the
box. If the entire box is weighed, one missing packet would require the
measurement to discriminate 1:40 or 2.5%. If each stack is weighed
independently, the system needs only to discriminate 1:20 or 5%. The net effect
is to increase systems resolving capability by a factor of two.
An added benefit of the selective weighing is the ability to ignore the
packaging in the measurement, farther increasing the systems performance.
